Implicity and Explicity learning:A Necessity

0. Introduction

The main area of this paper is concerned with the importance of learning strategies and learning techniques within the whole area of foreign language instruction whereas the particular focus in this study will analyse the problem of how to foster both explicit and implicit learning strategies when reading English texts. This will also involve describing the changes in the demands for teaching and learning. By taking examples from the results of research on the good language learner, certain aspects of the important groundwork for current research into learning strategies and learning techniques will be shown; in addition, definite conclusions can be drawn from the results of this research in the context of the importance of a flow concept as a vital component within the general concept of strategies. Based on previous results, the conclusions drawn will open up new questions for further research.

Within the whole field of research into learning and teaching methodologies, there has been, on the whole, a noticeable increase in research within the framework of learning strategies. Two diametrically opposed approaches have been followed in this area of foreign language teaching and research. Whereas, on the one hand, the attempt has been made to train for an explicit implementation of strategies (cf. Nold & Schnaitmann, 1997), the opposite path has also been taken by taking measures to elicit and promote the more implicit, "natural" learning strategies. (Bleyhl 1996a, 1996b).Within the whole area of discussion about strategies, the current state of the debate is expressed in terms of the following dichotomies i.e. explicit/implicit, conscious/subconscious and observable/non-observable. Although these dichotomies are perceived to be incompatible by many authors, Bialystok has managed to reconcile them and bring them together in her model of interacting knowledge sources. Following the presentation of this model, conclusions relevant for research will be drawn. In the latter part of the paper, there will be a report on our own empirical investigations which were carried out as part of a research project on the interaction between strategies and interests in the field of reading English texts. The changes in the demands on learners and teachers together with changes in perspectives caused by these new demands provided both the starting point for and reasoning behind posing particular questions as part of the research project. In addition, the results relevant to this part of the study have been selected to gain more concrete insights into these aspects of explicitness as against implicitness with regard to knowledge strategies for learners. In the final part, conclusions will be drawn.

1. The changes in the demands made on teachers and learners

Completely different demands caused by technological, social, cultural and economic changes in society as well as by the short-term value of knowledge and skills in an ever-changing world are nowadays being made on teachers and learners. This situation continues to make increasing demands for a very high degree of flexibility and for highly sophisticated thinking skills (cf. Nenniger, 1995). In addition, it has not only led to "a growing scientific interest in gaining more insight into self-directed, intentional learning" (Konrad & Wosnitza, 1993: 1) but it has also, at the same time, aimed at equipping the pupils with the full range of skills to enable them to act as autonomous learners both during their schooling and beyond so that self-motivated learning becomes a life-long process (cf. Finkbeiner 1995a). This aim is also firmly based on an epistemological change which Wolff (1996) claims is strongly influenced by the new insights gained from cognition psychology, cognitive science, radical constructivism, biology as well as from neurophysiology. Resulting from the new shift of emphasis in the educational debate, Wolff (1996: 2) has come to the following conclusions:

  • Understanding and learning are seen as active processes of construction involving the incoming perceptual stimuli and the learner's current state of knowledge.
  • Learning is an autonomous process carried out mainly by the learner himself or herself in an independent way.
  • Learning is a process organised by the learner acting on his or her own initiative but with the result that autonomous responsibility and organisation emerge from the inherent logic and sense within a specific item pertaining to the learning process.
  • Learning is an exploratory process planned by the learner acting within a paradigm based on hypothesis formation and testing.
  • Learning is a process controlled by the learner who makes use of strategies.
  • Learning is a process which works particularly well in groups.
Learning is a process which benefits very greatly from a varied and authentic learning environment.
  • The outcome of any particular learning process varies from learner to learner, because knowledge is always subjective and takes different forms for each particular learner. (Wolff 1996: 2)

This view of learning requires a form of education that has the following characteristics: open, democratic, liberating, based on pair and group work and relevant to the real world. This type of education has many associations with the ideas supported by proponents of modern methods and which nowadays are being re-examined in the light of the new approaches based, for example, on active learning methods (c. f. Bach & Timm 1996; Finkbeiner 1995a, 1996a 1996b; Gudjons 1989) or based on communicative, interactive and experience based approaches (c. f. Legutke & Thomas: 1993; van Lier: 1996).

2. Learning strategies as a research topic: the "good language learner"

The question as to what is the best way to learn how to think and how to learn and how to teach these skills has always been an existential problem for people interested in knowledge and education.

The "batai munhu" twin-gun in separate SA shows

THE Batai Munhu combination of Sulumani Chimbetu and Jah Prayzah invades Mzansi this weekend to hold separate shows in Johannesburg and Pretoria respectively.

The musicians will take turns to perform at two of the venues in Germistown and Johannesburg.

Sulu performs at Safari Hotel International in Jo’burg tomorrow, while Jah Prayzah performs at the same venue on Saturday.

This comes after Jah Prayzah’s performance at The Sports Palace tomorrow where Sulu will also be on stage the following day.

Tomorrow Sulu travels to Soshanguve for a show at Kopanong Hall while Jah Prayzah ends his tour at Diepsloot Community Youth Centre on Sunday.

Given the background of local acts that have flopped in South Africa, the weekend venture could be disastrous.

Both Sulu and Jah Prayzah have struggled to maintain their following due to lack of new content.

A joint tour would have been favourable.

But Joe Nyamungoma, Sulu’s publicist feels the promoters have done their homework.

“We tried to have the two respective promoters working together, but it appears they are determined to go it separately,” Nyamungoma said.

The last time Sulu performed on the other side of the Limpopo there were reports of violence at his Pretoria show and Nyamungoma said the promoters have made the necessary arrangements to ensure a smooth and safe tour. This will be the first time for Jah Prayzah to perform in South Africa.

More Love Reggae Bash Flops

JAMAICAN artists, Kingly T and Wildlife, failed to live up to their billing at the Nelson Mandela Hall at the Exhibition Park, Harare on Friday night.

The event was a hive of disorder as the show was delayed by over three hours.

The only significant crowd that was observed was that of officials wearing blue and gold wrist bands which were made up for artists, media and event staff.

Jah Warrior, the first act to hit the stage only started performing at around 11pm in front of an uninspiring small crowd.

Until 3am the main acts had not come to perform.

Local artists who were billed to support the Jamaican artists such as Mannex, Transit Crew and DJ Tach were seen roaming the venue seemingly admiring the empty spaces.

The emptiness of the venue however, did not deter artists from performing with Mannex and Transit Crew keyboardist Bla Liba mentioning they meant business even in such unpleasant circumstances.

Mannex said: “Although there are few people, we are out here to work and have fun and that’s what we will do.”

In another show held in the capital on Friday, local dancehall musicians Shinsoman, Sniper Storm, King Shady and Winky D performed for thousands of University of Zimbabwe students at the Lion Lager Beer Festival Campus Nite Activation parties’ finale held at the Harare Gardens.

Though well attended the show had its own shortfalls among them a terrible performance by Shinsoman, who opened the show.

The Mawaya-waya hit maker found the going tough and his use of backtracks did not save the situation as he ended up facing the wrath of revellers who threw missiles onto the stage as well as pouring him with beer.

Killa T appeared to have saved the day when he came to collaborate with Shinsoman receiving wild cheers.

King Shady, who came second backed by a live band, however, thrilled reggae fans with songs such as Tsoka YaDanmore, Vadzimu Woye, Letter to Mai Huni and his latest hit Machirachete.

Sniper with his Masoja Band had a splendid set, but reaffirmed his beef with fellow dancehall musician Winky D, who later came on stage sending the crowd into frenzy.

Meanwhile, the October World Music Festival came to life on Friday night with Sulumani Chimbetu staging at Book Café and at Mega 2 in Hatfield.

A wide array of artists among them children of legends in local music Biggie Tembo Jnr, Gary Tight and Selmor Mtukudzi sharing the stage with various other musicians including Imagine International Festival winners and Chibuku Road to Fame second runner up Were group and Zimboita.

It was Selmor Mtukudzi who stole the show with an excellent performance featuring her father’s hits such as Ziwere and Handiende. She rocked the crowd further with her latest hit Wakandipedzera Nguva.

The festival runs till October 19.

Jamaican sting cross borders

THE organisers of the highly publicised dancehall extravaganza dubbed Sting Dancehall Fiesta said the show will go ahead despite the postponement of a fight between local boxer, Tapiwa Tembo and Zambian Gibon Kamota that was scheduled to go along with the gig.

The Dancehall fiesta, which takes place today at City Sports Centre, was initially organised as a combination with the World Boxing Union (WBU) Championship tournament which has since been moved to December 22 at the same venue.

The development means that it is now the dancehall enthusiasts who will be in for a rare treat while boxing fanatics will be entertained by fights between upcoming local boxers.

Partson Chimbodza of Chipaz Promotions who is behind the organising of the event confirmed to NewsDay about the development adding that all dancehall enthusiasts and boxing fans must not panic.
Sniper Storm
                                                                        Sniper Storm

“I am here to dispel rumours that had put many dancehall enthusiasts in panic mode concerning the Sting dancehall extravaganza. City Sports Centre will be on fire tomorrow (today) despite the postponement of the WBU Championship tournament. Local boxers will still square up in the ring,” said Chimbodza.
An array of dancehall artistes in the form of Sniper Storm, Guspy Warrior, Freeman, Shinsoman, Dadza D and Killah T will take turns to clash each other in the dancehall music ring.

The event organisers said all was set for the show and all artistes who are billed to preform have confirmed and are promising fireworks.
Guspy Warrior
                                                                    Guspy Warrior

The concept of the show is just like the Jamaican Sting Festival. Artists are going to be paired by a means of a ballot where upcoming artists will have to pick a tag with a name of the artists to battle with.

The event organisers has however, emphasised that performing artistes must make sure the show remains a lyrical and musical confrontation between the artistes and nothing personal.

Facebook exterminates search privacy setting

Still hiding in Facebook's shadows? Not for much longer.

The company announced Thursday it is officially axing a privacy setting that allowed people to hide their profiles from other users in Facebook's search field.

The setting "who can look up my timeline by name" had already disappeared from the options for some users -specifically, those who weren't using the feature in December of last year.Thursday's change affects a "small percentage of people" on the site who were still using the feature, Facebook (FB, Fortune 500) said, although it did specify how many of its 1.15 billion active users were impacted.

Related: Tech stocks partying like its 1999

Facebook explained that the tool was outdated, because users could be found in other ways, either by clicking on their name in a mutual friend's Timeline or News Feed. The social network also said people became confused when they were unable to find a friend via search.

It's the latest development in Facebook's long-running privacy saga. Frequent changes to its privacy settings have confused some users, and controversial statements from CEO Mark Zuckerberg about how people shouldn't be doing the things they want to keep secret in the first place.

Earlier this year, Facebook expanded its internal search capabilities with the roll out of Graph Search. The feature allows users to sift through the social network's vast data trove to find "friends who live in my city," "tourist attractions in Italy visited by my friends," and similar lists. It also allows Facebook to eventually challenge sites that rate and rank local attractions like restaurants and hotels.

Facebook noted in the announcement that it provides other privacy settings, including control over the visibility of each individual post.

"...I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands..."

A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the 4 pups, and set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard.

As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt tug on his overalls.

He looked down into the eyes of a little boy.

"Mister," he said, "I want to buy one of your puppies."

"Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat of the back of his neck, "these puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money."

The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket,he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer. "I've got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?"

"Sure," said the farmer. And with that he let out a whistle. "Here Dolly!" he called.

Out from the doghouse and down ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur.

The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight.

As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed
something else stirring inside the doghouse.

Slowly another little ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller.

Down the ramp it slid. Then in a awkward manner, the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up....

"I want that one," the little boy said, pointing to the runt.

The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said, "Son, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would."

With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe.

Looking back up at the farmer, he said, "You see sir, I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands."

With tears in his eyes, the farmer reached down and picked up the little pup. Holding it carefully he handed it to the little boy.

"How much?" asked the little boy.

"No charge," answered the farmer, "There's no charge for love."

Facebook editing function raises concern

A new feature allowing Facebook users to edit their status updates may result in “stitch-ups”, an expert has warned.

Previously, an update would have to be deleted and reposted with any changes, losing any comments or “likes”.

But the new capability, introduced to help users correct spelling and grammatical errors, means posts can be modified, and their content changed.

Facebook users who liked or interacted with the original post are not notified of any changes made.

A spokesman for Facebook explained that the update was intended to help people address typos or auto-correct errors, but wouldn’t comment on the potential vulnerabilities.

The capability to edit posts is already available on rival social networks, and Facebook has allowed its users to edit photo updates and their comments on other people’s updates for some months.

However, the lack of notifications means that users who may have liked an innocuous post, such as “I love my cat”, could find their name beside a post which says something entirely different, or even offensive.

“The latest update from Facebook to allow editing of posts after they have been published raises some real concerns amongst individuals I know and business clients of mine,” Kieran Hannon, director of social media consultancy eSocialMedia, said

“A like or a comment made on a previously static piece of content is now open to misinterpretation— a fact that many less informed users are currently unaware of.

“The opportunity to ‘stitch up’ friends or foes on Facebook has increased dramatically,” said Kieran Hannon director, eSocialMedia

The editing facility comes after Facebook revealed more than half its users accessed the site on mobile phones, which are more prone to typing errors.

“It’s unlikely this will have any impact beyond making it easier to correct spelling mistakes,” said Matt Owen, of digital business specialists Econsultancy.

“If this update allows people to stay in control of their social profile, ultimately they will be happier with it and use the product more.
“It’s a win-win for both Facebook and its users.”

The new edit feature does not yet apply to company pages.

But Hannon says he will be advising his business clients to be cautious.

“It is a concern that a brand could like or comment on a post that is later updated to something that undermines or potentially damages the company’s brand,” he said.

Samantha Lewthwaite - from innocent child to a worldwide jihadist

From an inconspicuous upbringing in a Co Down town to becoming the most wanted female terror suspect in the world.

Source:The Telegraph

The wife of one of the London suicide bombers, mother-of-three Samantha Lewthwaite, is on the run accused of spearheading a Muslim extremist group's jihad.

Dubbed the White Widow, Lewthwaite is wanted in connection with an atrocity in Kenya, her alleged role in bomb-making factories and terrorist activity in Yemen.

Such is the perceived threat posed by Lewthwaite, a dedicated unit of the elite SAS has reportedly been tasked with finding her.

While Northern Ireland is no stranger to homegrown terrorism, Samantha Lewthwaite's story is unique.

Born to a British soldier from England and a Northern Irish Catholic mother, Lewthwaite spent her early years in the family's home in Banbridge's Whyte Acres estate.

The family moved to Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire but in 1995 Lewthwaite's parents Andy and Christine separated.

Distraught, Lewthwaite spent more time with Muslim neighbours and was apparently drawn to the faith by their close family ties. Then, at the age of 17, she converted to Islam, marking her religious conversion by changing her name to Sherafiya and swapping jeans and jewellery for a traditional long gown.

In 2002, she married Jermaine Lindsay in an Islamic ceremony at a house in Aylesbury.

The pair met on an Islamic chatroom while she was studying religion and politics in London and he was working as a carpenter. Neither of her parents attended the wedding.

Days after her husband blew himself up on a London Underground train in July 2005, killing 26 people, pregnant Lewthwaite tried to distance herself from the attacks. She described the terrorist bombings as "abhorrent".

In a statement she explained: "Jamal is accountable for his actions 100% and I condemn with all my heart what he has done."

In 2009, Lewthwaite and her children disappeared from the UK.

She resurfaced two years later after travelling to Kenya using a false passport.

The Kenyan authorities issued a photograph of a woman wanted for questioning after a bomb factory was discovered at a house in Mombasa. The picture on it was that of Lewthwaite.

Police said they were tipped off that terrorists were planning a bombing campaign on shopping centres and hotels. Last year, Kenyan police revealed they were searching for her on suspicion of taking part in a grenade attack on a bar which had been packed with tourists watching an England football match. Three people were killed and 25 injured.

Lewthwaite is believed to be in the inner circle of al-Shabaab, an al-Qaida-linked group, the name of which translates as 'the people'.

It is understood she controls the group's finances and is a vital conduit between al-Qaida groups in Pakistan and east Africa.

Al-Shabaab is a militant group fighting to create an Islamic state in Somalia.

Conspiracy Theory

Written by: AlexanderVancel on April 20, 2013.
Last revised by: Michael Caldwell on April 25, 2013.

With the second suspect now in custody after a day of Boston being on lock down justice can finally be served to one of the two men responsible for the bombing on Monday. I have been following this story for a few days and have already noticed a trend repeating itself as far as tragedies go, the conspiracy theory. Yes, there are already conspiracy theories stating that the two men who were targeted were in “in theory” pawns for a different, bigger scheme against the United States. There are already people re-posting these ridiculous claims such as, “Navy Seals were actually the ones who planted the bombs in Boston.” This is a real accusation that some might have already seen floating around in cyberspace and it is utterly disgusting.

The terrorist attack occurred not even 5 days ago and yet there are already those who truly believe that our government had something to do with the bombing and that this is going to be used to support some sort of new gun regulation for America. The same thing occurred shortly after the school shooting in Newtown where there were videos stating that the victims were still alive and there was even a picture just 2 days ago which allegedly showed the principal from Newtown at the Boston Marathon. This kind of nonsense is just being left untouched and re-posted and followed by so many people that it is sickening.

I served in the Active Army for Operation Enduring Freedom, deploying to Baghdad during the surge. This is the analogy that I want people to think about: someone creating a page on the internet with theories that one of my fellow brothers in arms was not actually dead, that it was all a cover up for some larger conspiracy for the United States government. This is what people are actually doing after tragic events like Boston and Newtown and it needs to stop. Just think if this was your family member who was brutally attacked at some charity benefit or your child at school, put yourself in that situation and if you cannot see that this type of tin foil accusation is outrageous, then I seriously suggest getting yourself check out by a doctor.

My prediction is that there will be talking points from the Conservatives about both immigration and gun control legislation having to do with the attacks in Boston. Somewhere, there will be a declaration that if we had a better “wall” protecting Americans from immigrants and if everyone had the right to a fully automatic rifle that we would have been safer. I know for some that this seems like I am way off base but there have been posts popping up stating that Obama is to blame because these two men were immigrants. I do not see how it is the president’s fault or anyone’s for that matter, that these individuals made the personal decision to attack Americans. The only parties responsible are the terrorists who actually detonated the explosives and to suggest otherwise is lunacy.

I have said it before, America is a great nation, and we need to start acting like it. The next time you hear some outlandish accusation that just seems ridiculous…stand up against it. Don’t just let conspiracy theorists tarnish the ACTUAL events which took place and the FACTS that support the REAL evidence. With situations that are delicate like a terrorist attack where innocent people died, there should be no reason why someone would take it upon themselves to degrade what happened and attempt to turn it into a grand scheme to take over America through government corruption. Stop this ignorance America, we are the “best nation in the world” so we need to lead by example, lead by using common sense.

My Theory behind the #Biggerheads

NB__ MY view for the Biggerheads does not refer to a biologically large headed individual(s), but only to the height of brains in their skulls (Intelligence).

By Tinotenda Samukange

#Biggerhead__A conceptual ability involved in reasoning, perceiving relationships and analogies, calculating, learning quickly etc. Earlier it was believed that there was one underlying general factor at the intelligence base, but later psychologists maintained that it is more complicated and could not be determined by such a simplistic method.

Inherited Biggerhead
_ It is generally accepted that a biggerhead is inherited but can also be related to the environment. While studies showed that heredity is an important factor in determining such a wide reasoning; it was also suggested that environment is a critical factor in determining the extent of its expression. An investigation done recently revealed that 70 percent of the differences in the twins’ I.Q. scores were attributable to inherited traits. (Brain Metrix)

Highly bigger-headed Society: usually refers to a community where people with higher I.Q/ geniuses meet and exchange their ideas for the benefit of humanity, and to encourage the uses of intelligence. Usually a certain I.Q score should be obtained to join one of those societies.
(This therefore takes us to the social media networks where a variety of biggerheads are put to test; the main goal we try to achieve is a better understanding and a viable public sphere that can drive the issue of Democracy forward)

How can we attain this “Biggerhead”?

There are certainly ways to achieve this biggerhead, also called smallhead amplification/ enhancing, by practicing many proven cognitive tools such as problem-solving heuristics, creativity techniques and decision-making gears. An upsurge of the ‘head’ level can only result in a better life, and standard of living.

Below are some small head boosters:

Deep thinking: in life it’s not enough to just react to events, and situations, rather we should have a conscious objective and select our actions to get nearer our objective. Also it’s important to think about consequences of our actions, to minimize the possibilities of errors and regret. Deep thinking would normally help you live better, and reach your goals.

Good reasoning: it is the key to success, especially if performed consciously and in the proper order:

1) Have an objective,
2) make a general sensing about it,
3) determine your decision based on your sensing,
4) Make alternate plans (along the main objective),
5) Select the best response/ plan.

Some Definitions closely related to natural Biggerheads:

Gifted : used to describe individuals having great natural ability or talent, usually the equivalent of “intelligent”, this term is used often with children ”a gifted child”, also other possible equivalent words are “smart”, “nerd”, “brainy”, “genius”…etc.

Giftedness: is an intellectual ability significantly higher than average. The fact of having a mind ahead of the physical growth, and could be simply the equivalent of “intelligence”.

Creativity: mental process of generating new ideas or concepts, or new associations between existing ideas or concepts.

: also called mega-brain is used as a term to refer to machines or individuals who can perform/ process complicated tasks in a relatively faster speed.

It is said that “command responsibility is an omission mode of individual criminal liability: the superior is responsible for crimes committed by his subordinates and for failing to prevent or punish (such crimes)”.

A superior is culpable for “personal dereliction” or “where his failure to properly supervise his subordinates constitutes criminal negligence on his part.”

The #Bigger_head Principle in ZimElections13)

For so many days, Zimbabweans pondered, asking themselves which candidate has what it takes to be president, or at least which one has what it takes to win the election. The answer to this question was just far-reaching.

Based on my personal observation, I think I may know….

…If you think about it, we are often drawn to #bigger-headed characters, dramas and soapies. (Mukadota, Paraffin, Gringo, Mickey Mouse, Lion King and Crime and Investigations etc.) What is it about #bigger-heads that makes us want to watch them? Perhaps its logic and reason that purports “Inductive Reasoning”

Inductive reasoning
is observing a set of characteristics based on a premise of broad generalizations and statistical analysis which leads to the development of a hypothesis__Biggerheads

In any case, #Biggerheads is clearly an important factor in politics, a factor we can use to divine a hidden law of African politics – the candidate with the Biggerhead, usually wins. Call it the Bigger-head Principle.

Before the just past 31July Zimbabwe Election, I had so many questions in my relatively “Biggerhead”… the most difficult question was….Which candidate has the “biggerhead” in this election?

Male politicians have '#Biggerheads' in more gender-equal cultures

Los Angeles, CA (October 17, 2012)-When it comes to analyzing gender stereotypes in the media, studies have shown that photographs of men focus on male faces while photographs of women are more focused on women's bodies. A recent study from Psychology of Women Quarterly, a SAGE journal, finds that this type of "face-ism" is even more extreme in cultures with less educational, professional, and political gender discrimination.

"Being in a relatively egalitarian cultural context does not shield politicians from this face-ism bias; in fact, it exacerbates it," wrote study authors Sara Konrath and Josephine Au.

The researchers examined the differences in face-ism by measuring the facial prominence of over 6, 500 male and female political figures in photographs from more than 25 different cultures. Facial prominence was determined by measuring the length of the head in a photograph (from the chin to the top of the head) and comparing it to the length of the body shown in the photograph. The researchers then analyzed these face/body ratios by culture and found that women's bodies were more prominent in photographs from cultures in which women have more educational, professional, and political opportunities.

The authors wrote, "Understanding this double-bind is fundamental to understanding how societal pressures might shape the visual depictions of male and female leaders online, whether political or otherwise."

The authors claimed that stereotypes associated with each gender are more divergent in richer and more institutionally gender-equal cultures overall, and that these photographs are simply a visual representation of a deeply-ingrained, cultural concept. "The face-ism bias is likely due to unconscious influences, so simply making politicians and their support staff aware of this bias and its negative implications for female politicians could reduce this bias."(Psychology of Women Quarterly 0361684312455317, first published on August 8, 2012)

What others think about __ BIGGERHEADS

“Yes definitely. That’s why my IQ is only 118 because I have a very tiny head. My sister has the same head size and IQ even though she is ESFJ. That’s why i think MBTI has nothing to do with IQ. Biggerhead is a large factor. And from what I’ve observed I’ve objectively found all the people in lower difficulty classes and people who scored low on the sat had “small heads“around my size. The people who were national merit semifinalists had #Biggerheads or at least #Biggerhead relative to their body size.” Personality Café

Is it possible for our future generations to be born with bigger heads and shorter limbs?

The theory of evolution says that organs which are not in much use become vestigial. As we today use more of our brains and less of our limbs (like sitting in front of computer all day long), is it possible that our future generations will be born with a bigger head and sorter limbs? Why___Why not?

“Perhaps the explanation is that babies have disproportionately #Biggerheads, and we are genetically programmed to like babies. Or perhaps #Biggerheads can better show sympathetic emotion”

Male Crickets with Bigger Heads Are Better Fighters, Study Reveals, Echoing Ancient Chinese Text

Jan. 7, 2009 — Observing and betting on cricket fights has been part of Chinese cultural tradition since at least the Sung Dynasty (A.D. 960-1278). This ancient practice has resulted in quite a detailed list of characteristics that Chinese practitioners think make for champion fighters. "Because money was involved, there was a strong incentive for the practitioners of this sport to observe their cricket fighters closely," says Kevin Judge, a biology postdoctoral researcher at University of Toronto Mississauga. Zim in BBA vote dilemma

Could the cold relationship between Zimbabweans Pokello Nare and Hakeem Munyaradzi Mandaza in the Big Brother The Chase influence the outcome of the eviction process taking place tonight?

By Tinotenda Samukange{The Standard 7 July}

Hakeem last week bluntly told Big Brother he was “not friends with Pokello”.

This was despite Pokello’s proclamation that she took Hakeem as “a little brother”.

The claim has left Zimbabweans polarised as they are this week again forced to choose between the two.

His dislike for Pokello could also dent his chances despite being elected Head of House for this week.
The budding enmity however might not be at the level of past participants Roki and Maneta who verbally and physically fought in full view of Africa resulting in their expulsion from the reality show.

In a candid diary session, Hakeem, who survived eviction last week without Zimbabwe’s vote, described Pokello as a girl from uptown, a colloquial for a privileged life and added that he would never be friends with her.

There have been a raging debate on social media on the relationship between the two countrymates.
Chiwoniso Demo posted on Team Pokello’s Facebook page: “Pokello must stay and Hakeem to come back home”.

Ashel Manyange posted: “People, we might blame Hakeem but to be honest enough, he got the bad influence from Cleo on the first date in the Rendezvous room that’s why Cleo keep (sic) nominating Pokello.”

To survive eviction, a housemate would need a vote from their country in order to at least have a starting point.

Hakeem and Pokello’s votes are likely to be split because most of the countries that saved Pokello when she was up for eviction are the same ones that also saved Hakeem.

What is Life...? Truly it’s a question of ages but in most cases it’s left unanswered...!..

Right from birth I was told that my mother conceived me in ward "B"...a lot of people gathered celebrating my "B" 1st Present was a “B” (bear) &was also notified that the man who carried us home had “B”-blue-bird vehicle…we lived in a humble neighborhood Chishamiso Unit-“B”…I grew up strong & “B”-brilliant young “B”-boy … attended my Primary Education @ a group “B”-School & never passed as expected since I could not shape my “Bs” so well… I proceeded to Secondary School… life never gave the impression of favor ,in everything I did…wrote my O’Level & attained all “Bs” I was so much contented with my results “B”-Before someone notified me that I had been incorporated into the ideology of False consciousness… I then proceeded to A’ Level…which I believed by its “designation” it meant Level of “A”-acquiring… life seemed easy going here…the results shocked me again when I had all “Bs”… it then became so much crystal clear that I belonged to the “B”-CLASS…in other words “2nd Class” deducing from the numerical stance of the alphabetic order…I rejected myself to something useless… I was so disheartened by the fact of belonging to the “B”-CLASS…& marveled that “from birth” to when, then...? GOD..!!.Something came into my mind and at this point I targeted radical change from this “B”-Status but the situation worsened…& I decided to just follow the wind, I looked at life’s solid side and told myself never to feel inferior or made a mediocre by elements of life that are in most cases “SOCIAL CONSTRUCTS”… “GOD KNOWS OUR RIGHT POSITIONS”…the right position is made known to everyone…. Noted in Jer: 29:11: For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

Never go to HR for help

After 2 years of selfless service, a man realized that he has not been promoted, no transfer, no salary increase no recommendation and that the Company is not doing nothing about it. So he decided to walk up to His HR Manager one morning and after exchanging greetings, he told his HR Manager his observation. The boss looked at him, laughed and asked him to sit down saying. My friend, you have not worked here for even one day.

The man was surprised to hear this, but the manager went on to explain.

Manager: - How many days are there in a year?

Man: - 365 days and sometimes 366

Manager: - how many hours make up a day?

Man: - 24 hours

Manager: - How long do you work in a day?

Man: - 8a.m to 4pm. i.e. 8 hours a day.

Manager: - So, what fraction of the day do you work in hours?

Man: - (He did some arithmetic and said 8/24 hours i.e. 1/3(one third)

Manager: - That is nice of you! What is one-third of 366 days?

Man: - 122 (1/3x366 = 122 in days)

Manager: - Do you come to work on weekends?

Man: - No sir

Manager: - How many days are there in a year that is weekends?

Man: - 52 Saturdays and 52 Sundays equals to 104 days

Manager: - Thanks for that. If you remove 104 days from 122 days, how many days do you now have?

Man: - 18 days.

Manager: - OK! I do give you 2 weeks sick leave every year. Now remove that14 days from the 18 days left. How many days do you have remaining?

Man: - 4 days

Manager: - Do you work on New Year day?

Man: - No sir!

Manager: - Do you come to work on workers day?

Man: Nor sir!

Manager: - So how many days are left?

Man: - 2 days sir!

Manager: - Do you come to work on the (National holiday)?

Man: - No sir!

Manager: - So how many days are left?

Man: - 1 day sir!

Manager: - Do you work on Christmas day?

Man: - No sir!

Manager: - So how many days are left?

Man: - None sir!

Manager: - So, what are you claiming?

Man: - I have understood, Sir. I did not realize that I was stealing Company money all these days.

Have a Nice Day.

Nurse aide raped in mortuary at Parirenyatwa

In his defence outline, Goto claimed he was the nurse aide’s lover for two years. Prosecutor Ms Tinashe Kanyemba alleges that on October 1 last year at about 6:30pm the complainant met Goto in the corridor at their workplace and grabbed her handbag. The State says the complainant resisted, but she was overpowered and Goto dragged her into his office which is in the morgue. He is alleged to have indecently assaulted her before raping her. During the incident, the State says, their workmate Mr Stan Chikondo knocked at the door and Goto got up and put on his clothes and the complainant followed suit. After a minute, Mr Chikondo got inside the room and saw the complainant crying and asked what was happening. The complainant, it is alleged, told Goto that she was going to the matron and he followed her. Along the way Goto allegedly pleaded with the complainant not to report the matter. Mr Muranda, it is alleged, phoned Goto who came to his office and upon quizzing, the mortuary attendant admitted to the crime and apologised saying he would do “something” for the complainant. On October 4 the same year Goto’s wife phoned the complainant telling her she wanted to discuss the issue. The complainant phoned Goto after failing to get hold of his wife and he told her to wait. After Goto’s wife did not turn up, the complainant made a report that led to Goto’ arrest.

A Lesbian Author from Zimbabwe voices Up!

Ruth Marimo a Zimbabwean by birth  went to the United States as a teenager after surviving scrapes and heartbreaks from the suicide of her mother when she was a young child...

Finally settled on U.S. shores, she married an American citizen, they had two children but wedded bliss turned into a nightmare as she confronted her sexual identity and he turned on her in physical rage.

Her immigration status was the weak link in the chain and her husband reported her to immigration and deportation proceedings ensued.

Fortunately the attempt failed but in the interim, she spent time in detention where she began to jot down her feelings and confront all the truths and issues our society shuns, from racism, illegal immigration, and homosexuality to sexual and domestic abuse.

It was a book for her children – Chido and Simba – who could soon be left abandoned as she was at age 6. She also found hope in accepting herself as an African woman who is gay.

Those notes from prison and beyond have been compiled in a new book called “Freedom of an illegal Immigrant: The Untold Story of My Search for a Place in the World.”

Speaking to Sahara TV’s Fungai Maboreke, Ms. Marimo asserted that she is one among many African women who are lesbian or have such sensibilities but cannot come out in the open due to social, cultural and quasi-political idiosyncrasies.
“I’ve heard endless stories of people who come out to me,” she said. “Some obviously keep it secretive and stay in their heterosexual marriages even though they are having other relationships on the side…”
Now in a same-sex relationship, she and her partner are raising her two girls aged 8 and 4 and her 8 year old is an academic achiever, able to outwit children older than herself in any spelling bee. They live in Omaha, Nebraska, where she attends the Metropolitan Church.

The 33-year-old still writes. She writes poetry, which she reads publicly each month.
Maboreke recalled the intolerance and prejudice against gays displayed by Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe when he scorned them as “worse than pigs.” To this, Ruth Marimo retorted: “He is entitled to his opinion, but his opinion does not define who I am”

Her book can be found online on

1)Is it justifiable for someone to claim a homosexual right in Zimbabwe?

2)Is it good to our Society?

3)What does it portray about the Zimbabweans living in the Diaspora ?

Satanism hits Prison Services

                                         George Renee Lungange&Ngezi Bragston

Zimondi's deputy, Huggins Machingauta, said the continued stay of the satanists at the prison is "worrying".

“I take it today here we have members of different church denominations at this meeting. There are satanists detained just behind us, find ways of assisting them,” Zimondi pleaded to prison stakeholders whom he was engaging for assistance.

Remand Prison is housing two Congolese nationals and a Rwandese after they appealed to prison authorities to start their satanism church at Tongogara Refugee Camp in Chipinge.

While detained at Mutare Remand Prison authorities pleaded to separate the three,Busy Mana Thenetse,George Renee Lungange and Ngezi Bragston so that they would not influence fellow inmates to follow their satanistic church.

Last week two of the satanists told journalists at the prison that authorities were preventing them from following their tradition.

They said that the Zimbabwean authority should either quickly deport them or allow them to follow their religion while in prison.

Fellow inmates told journalist at the prison last week that, the two, when they arrived caused a stir after demanding human blood, a coffin and a red cloth so that they can demonstrate their power.

“We are a Christian country and we do not subscribe to their religion," said Machingauta. We have since engaged the relevant authorities to fast track their deportation but the process seems to be taking long.”

ZPS spokesperson Superintendent, Elizabeth Banda, said:
“We must think about the safety of officers who spend most of their time with these people. We are not happy with the satiation as we strongly believe their interaction with these satanists might also affect their private lives."

Dianah Pazvakavambwa, a Prison Ministry Coordinator with Faith Ministries, said they will pray for both officers and the satanists.(The Standard)

UK woman from Zimbabwe living with her husband and lover in same house

LONDON – A 33 year old woman originally from Zimbabwe is making international headlines after deciding to stay in the same house with her husband and lover.

“People might think it’s weird but I love both men and couldn’t choose between them,” the mum of two told the UK Daily Mirror.

Loved up: Paul, left, Maria and Peter

Maria Vogel Butzki, 33, originally from Bulawayo, now shares the family home in Barking, London, with her children Laura, 16, and Amy, 12 and the two men in her life Paul Butzki and Peter Gruman.

Maria, who grew up in Saurcetown and did part of her secondary education at Northlea, was 15 when she met Paul in school and she fell pregnant with Laura two years later. The couple got married before they had their second daughter, Amy, but the relationship hit a rocky patch in 2006.

Maria said “Paul was out of work for six months and it put a strain on our relationship. The stress led to less sex and we grew apart. Although we carried on with life – cooking, cleaning, looking after the children – we’d lost our intimacy. The relationship was more brother and sister than a couple.”

When Maria left her husband Paul for another man, she didn’t realize how much she’d miss him. At the same time, she couldn’t imagine living without her new lover Peter Gruman. So when the two men struck up an extraordinary friendship, she came up with the perfect solution… and moved Peter into the family home in Barking, East London.

“When I left Paul there was a huge hole in my life. But the thought of never seeing Peter again was heart-breaking. So living with both men is the only way."

Incredibly, the men agree. Paul, a railway assessor, says:“Peter is a great guy. When Maria first had the affair with him I was just heartbroken. But as I got to know him, I realized we have so much in common. We both adore fishing, and he’s like a surrogate dad to the kids.”
Peter, a construction site manager, adds: “We all get on so well. It doesn’t feel as if I’m sharing Maria. There’s no jealousy …it feels as if we are a team.”

Lovely family

It was last year that they all moved in together after three years of Maria to-ing and fro-ing between her husband and lover. Peter sleeps on the sofa while Paul has a room upstairs. Maria shares a bedroom with her eldest daughter.

She says: “The three of us never share a bed. Although I have a sexual relationship with each man, that side is kept very private. If Paul is out, then Peter and I might make love, and vice-versa. But both men turn a blind eye and we never discuss it with one another.”

“Some people are shocked, mostly because they get the wrong idea and think it’s some sort of threesome,” she says.

“Most people seem to think I should just remain with Paul, but those who see all of us together think differently.” She adds: “There are huge benefits to living together. For example, as Paul and I leave for work early, Peter is often able to take the children to school.

“Ultimately the children benefit from three adults able to help with school work or give them lifts. Financially too, it makes sense as the bills are split three ways.”
Ironically, Maria is now the one who sometimes gets jealous. “I’m left on my own when the pair of them go on a long fishing trip,” she says.

She’s unsure what the sleeping arrangements will be in their new house. “But we would never have any sort of Rota where I sleep with Peter one night and Paul the next. I do know I’m very lucky to have two wonderful men in my life.” (Daily Mirror)

The wife of the late "Zengeza N'anga" still believes his husband is alive!

Liliosa Punduma said that as someone who grew up in a family that follows traditions, she will not rush into marriage. “I strongly believe that Speakmore was well used by almost eight spirits that worked with him for healing and prophecy,” said Liliosa.

“Aive neshave renyoka, rejuzu, achiporofita nayasekuru vaigadza matare makuru and to believe that he has died is still far from me. He must be living somewhere semunhu aive neshave renjuzu probably he is under waters.

“I had begun to understand him and how he conducted his spiritual powers that the people who gathered in Chiweshe for his burial gave a great testimony. I am going to remain single until the spirit mediums speak to me for a way forward.

“As of now I will concentrate on my education. He would eat raw eggs and me, he is still alive,” she said.
Liliosa believes that her husband could have survived the ‘lighting’ that struck their house had he received quick attention.

“Dai vakamudhonza rurimi airarama because he was involved in a situation where he was not supposed to be killed,” said Liliosa.
“People were enveloped with fear and also the ambulance delayed to take us to hospital. If he comes back I have no problem receiving him as my husband after all the reports that he died because I strongly believe in spirit mediums,” she added.

“RED light districts that is lawfully ideal for prostitution is ordinary in some western countries, but Zimbabwe may soon encompass its own if views by some are taken seriously. There is no doubt that the issue is set to mess up the feathers of purist and moralists.”

The issue was prompted by calls from certain Members of Parliament recently to legalize prostitution .The calls are already causing a public stir, with debate centered on the compensation and inconvenience of authorizing prostitution. Those who are for prostitution say it has been in existence for a long time to the extent that it has become part of the society .
Authorizing the subordinate, they say, will only be recognizing the reality that prostitution will always be around .But those who are against the issue claims that authorizing the practice would be equivalent to markdown (ignore) morals.

A Social Science lecturer at Midlands State University Mr. Elikana Shoko said authorizing prostitution would obliterate (destroy) Zimbabwean culture.  “It is engaging in endorsed sexual encounters and immoral behavior from customary (traditional) point of view”, he said. “Society has its own values and norms which have to be safeguard by its own people and not to be demoralized by the customs of Westernization”. In developed countries, sex workers coddle (indulge) in sexual activities not because of poverty but to satisfy their sexual desires unlike prostitution in Zimbabwe who does it as a source of income,” he said. One can actually see the brains of a few restricted prostitutes who are well informed of what is happening elsewhere  and want  to smuggle such weird practices into Zimbabwean society .”It’s traditional abhorred (despised) behavior ,but today it’s a necessary evil because the prostitutes will tell you it’s better to engage in  sex than to die of hunger ,”he said.

Tatenda Dzane a Social Science student at Midlands State University stated that “how can an obvious evil be necessarily good.”

“Another expert in sociology, who detained to be named, said instead of authorizing prostitution, society needs to be educated to safeguard African customs.
“From a sociological point, it is benefiting to uphold teachings that can protect some of our esteemed (valued) ways of society in the fast changing world of modernity,” said the expert. “Let us prevent the loss of identity through fitting in Western ways of life that will result in a characterless society.”Prostitution has been there since time immemorial, but in our instance it was fueled by colonization. The “Profession” has always been condemned in African culture and calls for its legislation are not a non-starter in this part of the world.

Prostitution at Midlands State University boomed during the 2008 era when basic commodities such as food and clothing disappeared. Edison Rwafa a landlord in Senga Area 2 of Gweru said that “in 2008 prostitution at Midlands State University increased enormously, thus in some instances some male landlords in the area would even receive their rent in kind since money had became a scarce resource”

The History of Black Struggle claims that prostitution in Zimbabwe came with the modernity, as prostitutes were used for sexual gratification in the towns as wives of men working for the whites were not allowed  because of the nature of accommodation that was available at that time, in pursuit of this  a History Lecturer at Midlands State university Mr.Munhande said   “women were allowed into beer halls to provide entertainment and sexual pleasures to men who could not journey each time to the rural areas to be with their families”

Referred to as the world’s oldest profession, prostitution is the soliciting of sexual favors for monetary gain. It is a booming source of income in the West, particularly in countries like Germany, Greece and the Netherlands. The Minister  of Health  and Child Welfare ,Dr Henry Madzorera was quoted as saying at the workshop that there would be benefits if prostitution was legalized .Sex work, which I prefer to call prostitution ,if recognized ,will not increase the number of people infected with HIV and Aids ,especially if complemented with adequate  programmes because these people  have been there since biblical times and do not emit diseases ,” he said. Dr Madzorera‘s sentiments were echoed at the work shop by Bulawayo East Member  of Parliament Ms Tabitha  khumalo ,who was quoted as saying that prostitutes offered  critical service to society. They offer critical services which are always on demand and should not be called prostitutes but ‘pleasure engineers’,” said Ms Khumalo.

This trade is seen as a trade that knows neither Age nor Place that is why it also infringing in High Schools and Universities. Bryan Gumbo a Social Science student at Midlands State University said that “financial ills are costing the whole scenario of prostitution at Midlands State University”.

Unnamed Senga ZRP police stated that “a 21 year old girl of Midlands State University was caught and arrested for stripping in a Club named Insomnia on March 1, of this year”.

A group of boys of Midlands State University uttered this  at an interview with them “prostitution is nothing much to the destruction of African culture; they claimed that if the Western brought civilization to Africa and  people accepted then why not indulge prostitution as part of civilization…”
The issue of prostitution that has become another phase of globalization still remains the ball in the court those ascribed to the core idea of it defends it by saying “we are longing to see its authorization” whilst the non-affirmative are saying “why do we need to renew the age of Solomon”.
